On Thursday, May 28, 2015, the Lega Nord political party held a rally in the Piazza della Repubblica in Orvieto, Italy. We were told by the study abroad program coordinator that one of the speakers, Lega Nord leader Matteo Salvini, had attracted counter-demonstrations and protests in nearby towns and that we should avoid the event because it could be dangerous.
Of course, this had the effect of drawing several of us from the advanced photojournalism class to attend and cover the assembly.
While nothing extraordinary happened, the opportunity to practice our skills behind the lens in challenging conditions (low light, outdoors, heavy police presence, a language barrier, the potential volatility of the event) is exactly what we need and the perfect supplement to our class assignments. Everyone handled themselves well and the experience was fantastic.
I recently downloaded VSCO’s free Lightroom film emulation preset package and played around with the TRI-X sets while editing the photos, as I think the black & white works well with the noise present from shooting at high-ISO after dark while retaining necessary detail. Let me know what you think!
